Treatment of residual wastewater from printed circuit board production

27.11.2024

A large company specializing in the production of printed circuit boards was confronted with problems in the treatment of waste water containing resins. This wastewater from the production process, when stripping the resist film from the printed circuit board, produced sludge that was extremely difficult to dewater, causing the downstream chamber filter press to become clogged within a very short time and requiring extensive cleaning every two days. In addition, there were always wastewater batches with residual turbidity, which meant that the treatment had to be repeated and took a lot of time.

With the help of the mobile F&S laboratory, a new/optimized treatment process could be demonstrated at the customer's site within a few hours. All that was required was the optimized adjustment of the pH value and the addition of the reaction release agent ZetaPol, which is specially formulated for wastewater containing resins.

The changeover to this new treatment process brought the following massive advantages for the customer:

  • Massive reduction in the use of operating chemicals (acid & alkali). No more use of iron-III-chloride or other metal salts necessary.
  • Significantly simplified treatment process.
  • Success rate of the batches to be treated is 100 % - no more post-treatment necessary.
  • Achievement of large flocs, good sedimentation behavior and very clear water.
  • Significantly less sludge compared to the previous treatment process.
  • Production of very dry, easily squeezable sludge (cleaning of the chamber filter press only every 3 weeks instead of every 2 days)
  • Massive cost savings (lower sludge volume, savings on operating chemicals and elimination of metal salts)
