A well-known medium-sized surface finisher from southern Germany was confronted with problems of compliance of the discharge levels, particularly with copper, in its continuous neutralization. A standard product based on organosulfide (Dimethyldithiocarbamate) was used for heavy metal precipitation. In addition to the known and high environmental toxicity of this compound, the use of this product was also associated with a significant odour problem. Furthermore, residual turbidity was possible and the aid of iron salts was necessary for the mandatory withdrawal of organosulfide surplus, which caused additional sludge volume.
