DUALmEX® - the new efficient treatment process for industrial wastewater

A well-known medium-sized surface finisher from southern Germany was confronted with problems of compliance of the discharge levels, particularly with copper, in its continuous neutralization. A standard product based on organosulfide (Dimethyldithiocarbamate) was used for heavy metal precipitation. In addition to the known and high environmental toxicity of this compound, the use of this product was also associated with a significant odour problem. Furthermore, residual turbidity was possible and the aid of iron salts was necessary for the mandatory withdrawal of organosulfide surplus, which caused additional sludge volume.

With the introduction and implementation of the DUALmEX^® process developed by F & S and close supervision in the trial phase, several improvements could be achieved after a very short initial phase:

• The added quantities of specialty chemicals could be reduced by 60%
• The environmentally hazardous products are no more in use
• One obtains clear water after the treatment, thus minimizing the risk of residual turbidity or exceedance of the metal limit
• The discharge levels are continuously significantly and representatively well below and in some instances lie below the analytical detection limit
• The accruing sludge volume was reduced by 50-60%
• The odour issue in the ARA has tremendously improved
• All added treatment chemicals are liquid (not powder products)
• There are no more incrustations on walls and electrodes in the outlet of the wastewater plant and the downstream components
